Please note that Servals do not make good pets

Different Generations

There are many different number and letter variations to classify the different savannah cats, but to keep in in simple terms we differentiate the different generations using the (F). All Foundation Savannahs have an F and a number associated with it to indicate how many generations it is from its Serval ancestor. This however is not how TICA will recognize the breed. An F1 kitten would be the first generation removed from the African Serval. An F2 would be the second generation removed from the African Serval, and so on.

F1 ~57% Serval
F2 ~35% Serval
F3 ~21% Serval
F4 ~16% Serval
F5 ~11% Serval

Nap time with Serval Big Sister

Please note SERVALS DO NOT MAKE GOOD PETS.

Let's look at what a serval is and where it comes from.

The Serval In Nature
Servals are found throughout the savannahs of Africa, where the grass is tall. The cat’s long legs allow it to walk easily through the vegetation. Their large ears help them to locate their favorite prey – the small rodents hiding in the grass.
Servals catch their prey by leaping and landing on their victims with both front paws. Servals can jump up to 10 feet in the air and catch a bird in flight. They are also good swimmers, tree climbers, and exceptionally great runners.
A Serval is solitary by nature and will roam up to 4 square miles which it claims as its own territory.

The Serval In Captivity
A Serval is a wild animal and usually doesn’t make a great house pet. The wild cat will live up to 20 years old and needs zoo-like outside/inside facilities with a large enough exercise area to run, a pool in which to swim and dive, and an area with lots of climbing possibilities. Servals will escape from anything that is not totally secure and are unlikely to return once having escaped. Servals are solitary animals and like to travel many miles when hunting.
At A1 Savannahs, we have invested thousands of dollars constructing a completely secure and extensive outside environment for our Servals. Their facilities include an indoor outdoor fenced area with trees and plants for natural shading and climbing. We have sprinkle hoses which run along one side of their enclosure so they can have their play time in the water.
Even though we spend ample hours socializing  all of our kittens they will never be a lap cat. When deciding to purchase a serval you need to take a lot of time and do a lot of research. These felines eat a lot and require a ton of quality time. If you work a 9-5 job then a serval is probably not the cat for you.
If you are looking for a pet and are attracted to the look of a Serval. We recommend that you consider purchasing a Savannah cat, which is a cross between an African Serval and a domestic cat. Take a look at our About Savannahs page for more information.

F2 Savannahs

Much like your F1 Savannah your F2’s will also need a lot of time put in to keep that loving and affectionate personality. Although your second generation Savannahs are a little more laid back and they enjoy their cuddle time on the sofa, and that playtime in the shower. With an F2 Savannah you have a little more freedom with still that big exotic look. This is a perfect cat for anyone that wants to spend a little time away from home but still have have that larger than normal cat that everyone awes over.

Sizing of a Savannah Cat

The size of the Savannah Cat depends very much on the size and type of their parents and also of the percentage of wild blood they inherit from the Serval.

The biggest cats we produce are the Male and Female F1 Savannahs and the F2 Savannah Males. They get about two and a half times larger than domestic house cats, with their weight from 15 to 20 pounds, and occasionally, over 25 pounds. F3 males are often still considerably bigger than a domestic house cat. We have produced F3 males ranging in the lower twenties with their weight but rule is 15 to 18 lean pounds.

F3 Female Savannahs, and all cats of further generations decrease in size but keep their long legs, big ears and the wild appearance. Savannahs need up to 3 years to reach their full size, so please be patient with your kitten.

Each individual cat will differ in size just like us humans. We can never know for sure exactly how big a kitten will get.

Savannah Cats

What is A Savannah Cat?
A Savannah cat is a cross between an African Serval and a domesticated house cat. Savannahs are noted for their tall and slender bodies and their large ears. Savannahs are one of the newer breeds in the world and there are just a few breeders worldwide that have achieved their goal of successfully mating a Serval to a domesticated cat.
Unlike other cross breed of animals, Savannah cats are classified by the amount of each breed that they contain. A cross between African Serval and domestic house cats. We have controlled our breeding process down to an exact science to ensure everyone receives the perfect pet for their household. From F1 Savannah Kittens through SBT Savannah Kittens, we have them all.
When breeding a domestic household cat with a beautiful exotic animal such as the African Serval, it takes caution, care, a lot of work and a lot of love. Here at A1 Savannahs we breed our Savannah kittens from the heart. Our pure love of the breed has helped us create the very breed that many have come to love. Our adorable Savannah kittens are heart wrenchingly beautiful and are extremely intelligent.
There is no better family pet than a Savannah cat. With the energy and loyalty of a brand new puppy and the independence and awareness of the best domestic house cat, the Savannah kitten is bred to have it all.
